Volunteer Job Descriptions

In order to reach our goals we are grateful for those individuals who volunteer to assist children with Autism and us in providing them services. Under the supervision of a Faison School staff person in charge, volunteers assist with various duties. If you would like to volunteer for The Faison School, please complete the volunteer application attached.

Bulletin board Volunteer

  • Designs and creates communication and/or artistic bulletin, information, and display boards.
  • Maintains up-to-date information on bulletin and information boards.

Classroom Volunteer/Mentor

  • Reads to children or lets them read to them.
  • Uses flashcards to help students reinforce words and multiplication tables.
  • Assists younger children with learning alphabet, colors, numbers, and identifying shapes.
  • Assist with supervising games and other areas that need an extra pair of hands.
  • Assists students with special projects.
  • Assists students in academic work without evaluating.
  • Gives help to individuals or small groups under the direction of staff in charge.
  • Interacts with student in natural environment
  • Prepares games and teaching devices for use by the students.
  • Assists in decorating the classroom.
  • Helps with inventory of teaching materials and supplies.
  • Assists in the supervision of students on the playground and field trips.
  • Listens to oral work.

Clerical Volunteer

  • Assists the support staff in the operation of the school as a receptionist, typist,
    or file clerk.
  • Assists with the telephone by taking messages, placing calls, and checking attendance.
  • Collects and sorts materials for duplication.
  • Operates duplication equipment.
  • Types forms, letters, and notices.
  • Addresses envelopes, messages, and notices.
  • Sorts, stamps, and addresses envelopes.
  • Runs errands, contacts teachers, delivers messages, and collects money.
  • Assists with inventory of supplies.

Fund Raising Volunteer

  • Assists the Director of Development in organizational activities for Fund Raising.
  • Assists with the set-up of events.
  • Assists with marketing efforts (information, news articles, etc.)

Handyman/Lawn Volunteer

  • Assists with repairs, replacements, installations, and construction.
  • Assists with landscaping activities.

Lunch and Play Time Volunteer

  • Assists the staff in feeding students as long as they are supervised by Faison School staff and are kept up to date on current feeding procedures. 
  • Assists with structure and transitions during lunch
  • Under the supervision of The Fasion School staff in charge of play time, works individually with one child or takes several children to the transition room.

General Functions and Responsibilities

  • Communicates effectively and maintains calm demeanor in stressful situations.
  • Uses good judgment and discretion
  • Is mature, friendly and sensitive.
  • Is professional in appearance and attitude.
  • Is independent and self-directed.
  • Demonstrates customer-friendly behavior.
  • Must volunteer a minimum of two times per month
  • Reports at scheduled time ready to work
  • Respects confidentiality

Supervision and Reporting

  • Supervised by The Faison School Staff in charge of the activity.
  • Concerns and issues discussed with Faison School staff in charge of the activity, if not resolved then the issue goes to the Education Director.
  • In-service paperwork/documentation will be kept on file in volunteer's record/file.

Training Provided

  • Tour and Orientation.
  • On the job training.
  • Annual in-service.
